Space Monkey Raspberry Saison

First, let me start off by saying that I wanted my first review to be a positive one, but unfortunately it is just a resounding meh.  Drinking a Space Monkey was not a light refreshing carbonated romp in the French country side on a hot summer day, but more of a sip of raspberry beer soda in a non-ac metro car, which is never fun.

Fegley’s Space Monkey Raspberry Saison came from a corked bottle and pours an amber color with a bit of a pink shade (I guess from the raspberries they either ferment this on or add post fermentation).  The first thing you notice about this beer is the aroma, man the aroma is great, a scent of raspberries and yeast.  The taste unfortunately is where this beer falls flat for me.  The taste is a bit sweet, with tones of raspberry and yeast.  Overall the favor came across as a bit artificial.  It had a syrupy mouth feel, with a nice carbonation level true to the targeted style.

Now did I outright hate this beer? Well no, I mean I did drink the whole bottle.  It just wasn’t for me.  I usually like beers in the saison style, but this went a little too far off to the sweet and syrupy side for me.  Now you’re saying, “but , but it is a raspberry saison,” and I hear ya, but I think between the mouth feel and the sweetness of the beer it moves away from what I normally expect in a saison (semi-dry, yeasty, and spicy).  I would like to believe I would have liked this beer a lot more if it was a bit dryer, but alas it wasn’t and as such I cannot recommend it.
